So, there isn’t really a battle of epic proportions between software dev’s, but there certainly is debate over what Twitter apps get the job done for Android powered phones. It seems that every app has something that’s keeping it from being the “cock of the walk.”
So, here are my reviews of my top three Twitter apps for Android:
Twidgit Lite (http://disretrospect.com/twidgit/)
Twidgit Lite is a nice widget that sits on your home screen and allows you to view new tweets, tweet, re-tweet, reply, send a direct message, mark favorites and navigate to links in an external browser. Overall, it has a very sleek UI that is very user-friendly. Its settings allow you to choose whether you want notifications on the arrival of new tweets and how frequently you want it to refresh.
Although it is a useful widget, it does however lack some key features. You can’t view or link to profiles, see your direct messages, or upload media to Twitpic, Yfrog, or other services. Also, it only uses one account, and when you remove the widget from the home screen, it removes your user data. So, you must provide your login data every time you have to re-populate it to your home screen (Which isn’t too bad, at least you know it’s not storing your personal info).
So, it’s Twitter at the core, without all the bells and whistles. But for what it can do, it does it fairly well.

Swift (http://www.swift-app.com)
Swift is a Twitter app that has most everything that you could ask for. The essentials are all there (tweet, re-tweet, direct message), and you can even see your latest mentions, your direct messages and view profiles. You can even search key words in the Twitter world and it shows you the trending topics on start up. Swift’s preferences allows you to set optional notifications, data encryption, what service you want to use for media uploads (pictures and video), and gives you the option to open links and hash-tags within Swift (instead of the external browser).
With all the customization Swift has to offer, there a few things that hold it back. I find the load time to be sluggish and not very “swift” at all. It could be my local T-Mobile service, but I have seen it commented on by others. With its loading style, it loads the timeline, mentions, and direct messages all separately when you view them. Swift also has no multi-account support, which for me isn’t a clincher, but some Android-users have this as priority for their Twitter apps.
Despite protracted load times, Swift has a very high functionality if you use it on Wi-Fi and loads of features.

TwitterRide (http://twitterride.net/)
My top pick for best Twitter app is TwitterRide. TwitterRide is a nice, neat Twitter app for everyone. Just like Swift, it covers all the basics (tweet, re-tweet, reply, direct message) and view all your messages, mentions, post images (TwitPic), follow links, trending topics and hash tags. Within the app settings you can choose (just like the other two) to add notifications on new tweets, new mentions, new direct message, and couple other features.
As far as flaws, TwitterRide is lacking a multi-account support and ability to upload videos. Which really isn’t key for my needs, but some would enjoy.
I thoroughly enjoy Twitter ride, its quick load times and all the capabilities.

The open source community has been watching the wrestling match between Google (s goog) and Cyanogen, open source developer Steve Kondik, with rapt attention. Kondik is the developer who has been producing enhanced CyanogenMod, an Android ROM build for months. CyanogenMod is based on the “open source” Android build, with special functionality cooked in. Recently, Google created a hubbub when it sent a “cease and desist” order to Kondik, drawing the ire of the open source community. The move surprised the community given Google’s professed love for it, and especially given that Android has been open source from the beginning.
Google has stated that there are apps inside the Android builds that are in fact not open source — Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube chief among them. The fact that these are commercial apps and not open source, means they cannot be incorporated in a free, open source build such as CyanogenMod. Kondik has indicated he will produce the mod without these apps, making a utility for users that aids in the removal of them before modding, and easy re-installation after his mod has been applied. The end result is the modding process has gotten more complicated, and the community is understandably unhappy.
A new Android developers alliance has been formed, the Open Android Alliance, that intends to produce open source versions of the restricted apps included in the standard Android build. These versions could then be distributed within mods distributed as open source. This seems to be a big task, so we’ll have to see how well it goes. I can’t see open source versions of Gmail and Google Maps in particular that will replace the commercial Google versions.
Google is understandably taking heat over this situation, but as is often the case in these open source arguments things may not be as they seem. It is very possible that Google has commercial contracts prohibiting them from allowing these apps to be included in open source versions. Stranger things have happened. Allowing the inclusion of these apps to continue, could set dangerous precedents for them going forward. Only Google knows.
I suspect that if CyanogenMod included the HTC Sense interface used on the Hero I am currently evaluating, that HTC would follow Google’s example. It is the same principle.
It seems to me that Google should not be including commercial apps in an open source OS in the first place. It is ultimately their responsibility to remove them, not the developers. They could have avoided a lot of grief if they had done so, and not thrown it on the backs of the developer community. That’s what doesn’t sit well with me over this whole situation. You can’t give a cupcake away and tell the recipients they can’t eat the sprinkles.
Google gave our buds at GigaOM this statement to clarify their position:
The power of open source is that the community can shape it as they see fit. One thing we know for certain — innovation doesn’t come from a single source. Google supports and encourages developers to make Android better.
It sounds good, but we’ll have to see how things progress going forward.
The open-source/Android world went into a frenzy last week when Google hit Android modder Cyanogen with a cease-and-desist letter, but it seems that this situation (unlike the Apple/Google Voice debacle, which nowadays seems like it’s been going on since THE BEGINNING OF TIME) is turning around.
For those not up on the actual issue at hand, Cyanogen makes custom ROMs for Google’s Android phones – that is, he rewrites the operating system with a few tweaks. Google’s point was that, although the Android OS is technically open source, the apps that come with the “Google Experience” phones, such as Gmail, GTalk and Maps, are not. And, since Cyanogen’s mod installs copies of these apps, he’s essentially distributing things he doesn’t have the right to (many refer to this as stealing – a concept that has all but disappeared from the brains of the under 25).
After this, an Android-hungry world of hackers went cuckoo bananas, calling Google such names as “jealous” and “liars” and “Apple” (oooh, that one hurts). But no one was apparently able to just take a damn breath. Yes, this does pretty much defeat the purpose of Android itself being open source. And yes, a cease-and-desist might have been a little overboard (diplomacy, Google!) But you really can’t blame Google for their argument, however poorly made. I would assume that some of that stuff is not fully under their control, that it’s the carriers who decide what has the “Google Experience,” and could care less about open source. Sucks, but that’s business.
But as all this was going on, I was just sitting there wondering why one couldn’t just back up the proprietary apps, install the ROM, and then put the closed apps back on? It seem like the simplest thing in the world, yet no one seemed to be asking this question – or at least, it wasn’t the first thing they said when they heard the story (yet it was the first and only thing that popped into my head – it’s called logic, people!). Everyone just wanted to yell at Google. Suprise, surprise, the internet is filled with idiots.
Well, it turns out that this is not really an issue anymore. A new blog post by Cyanogen says that you can, in fact, just back up your closed-source apps and re-load them onto a modded Android. Go freakin’ figure. A recent Twitter post of his says that he might still have to deal with stuff from carriers and hardware manufacturers, but at least this is a step in the right direction. A step, I might add, that took a total of three days to happen – which is apparently long enough to act like it’s World War III and it is ON.
Just another example of how the internet fosters idiocy on a level that man had not known before it’s inception. *sigh.*

Windows, el sistema operativo de Microsoft, es el principal rival de Chrome OS. Las armas de Google son la velocidad, la sencillez y la seguridad de un sistema minimalista, gratuito y de código abierto que no requiere equipos potentes para su funcionamiento. Además, cuenta con el hastío de los indignados usuarios de WindowsVista.
Como todos sabemos, el mercado de la tecnología cambia constantemente y a una velocidad vertiginosa, por lo tanto las empresas ya posicionadas en el mismo deben buscar nuevas estratégias para no perder esa pequeña cuota de mercado que poseen.
Una de estas empresas es Intel, la reconocida marca de la industria de los semiconductores, la cual esta ampliándose al mercado los portatiles y desarrollando softwares para integrarlos en sus productos.
Intel como parte de su estrategia de expansión presento su sistema operativo Moblin 2.1 pero corriendo en un teléfono móvil con procesador Atom.
Obviamente como todo SO para móvil, posee aplicaciones dedicadas a social networks, widgets para escritorio, etc. Lo que si me gusto es que posee la capacidad de correr aplicaciones en segundo plano, lo cual se agradece ya que en el Iphone/Itouch esto todavia no se puede hacer.
El nuevo SO se ve muy atractivo, asi que los que soñaban y ya planeaban adquirir un equipo con Android piensenlo bien.
Además como complemento a este tema, Intel abrira una tienda de aplicaciones para netbooks, yo dije lo mismo que ustedes, ¿existen aplicaciones para netbooks?, bueno la idea es desarrollar aplicaciones similares a las ya conocidas para notebooks pero más livianas y eficientes, lo cual el procesador Atom va a agradecer, pero como opinion propia me da la leve impresión que esta tienda va a ir más dirigida a la version movil de Moblin, para competir con la App Store, no creen ustedes?.

Peep – the Twitter Application by HTC was running smoothly since I got the phone on Saturday. This morning, weird shit started happening with my HTC Hero. The weather widget kept showing a moon with clouds despite it being 1pm in the afternoon and Peep kept crashing on me whenever I do a refresh for new Twitter messages. Did a quick search on Android forums and seems like its a global thing. Is this HTC’s doing or maybe the ROM got screwed? Gonna give it a day or two before deciding if I should roll back to the original Malaysian ROM. Tapping fingers while waiting ….
Mobile-for, the Belgacom affiliate responsible for the SMS parking services in several Belgian cities, has launched a mobile application to facilitate this service. The app, which can be tested in Leuven as from October 2009, can be downloaded on all Google Android enabled smartphones (which kinda limits the testing audience…) In the coming months however, the app should be available for other smartphones, such as iPhone and Blackberry.
With the app, the user doesn’t have to sms his licence plate any longer. He also knows the remaining parking time at all time. The next release will also give GPS coordinates for the nearest parking automat and the occupancy status of parkings in the neighbourhood.
Early 2010, they will start a pilot project to pay your parking ticket through Ping.Ping’s NFC (Nearest Field Communication) technology.

Applications
Android will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All applications are written using the Java programming language.
Application Framework
Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.
Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:
A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar

Libraries
Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed below:

Android Runtime
Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.
Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included “dx” tool.
The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.
Linux Kernel
Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

Cine, series y espectáculos
Aparecieron las primeras imágenes mostrando bocetos de lo que será el “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” que Universal Studios tiene planeado construir en sus instalaciones. De acuerdo a sus creadores, el parque tendrá atracciones que utilizarán lo último en tecnología. para garantizar una experiencia inmersiva en el mundo de Harry Potter. Link.
Se viene “Monstruoso 2″, y al igual que para la primera parte, su creador J. J. Abrahams, ya ha comenzado con la campaña viral para promocionar la película. Se supone que esta segunda parte comenzará justo sobre el final de la primera, con el monstruo atacando otras ciudades. Link.
El próximo lunes vuelve una de mis comedias preferidas, “How I met your mother”, en su cuarta temporada. A razón de esto, en E! online han estrenado cuatro adelantos del primer capitulo de la temporada. Link.
Se llevó a cabo la entrega de los Video Music Awards de MTV. Como siempre, tuvieron poco que ver con otra cosa que no sea la música para adolescentes. De hecho, me resulta raro que MTV siga entregando premios a la música, puesto que hace rato que no pasa ni 10′ de música por día. Quizás a partir del año que viene deban entregar premios a los realities pedorros con los que han sustituido toda la música de su programación. Más allá de eso, las dos cosas más comentadas del show fueron el tributo a Michael Jackson (que en particular me gustó mucho, sobretodo la parte con Janet Jackson), y la interrupción por parte de Kanye West a Taylor Swift cuando esta subió a buscar su premio. Ni hablar que estoy convencido de que esta fue una maniobra de MTV para buscar presencia en los medios, cosa que de acuerdo a varios analisis, han logrado con creces, generando millones de visitas a su web. Una muy mala noticia, es la de la muerte de Patrick Swayze (”Dirty Dancing”, “Ghost”), quien luego de batallar durante un largo tiempo con un cáncer pancreático, falleció el día 15 de septiembre por complicaciones causadas por su enfermedad. Link.
Esta va solo porque me causó mucha gracia: George Clooney declaró durante una ronda de prensa en el Festival de Cine de Toronto que “preferiría que le hiciese un examen de próstata en directo en televisión un tipo con manos muy frías que tener una página de Facebook”. This is it: el documental con material sobre los ensayos de los conciertos que Michael Jackson planeaba brindar en Londres, cuyas entradas, por cierto, se encontraban agotadas. Link.
From Paris with Love: una de las clásicas de policía bueno y policía malo obligados por alguna situación (o comandante) a trabajar juntos en una misión. En este caso particular, Jonathan Rhys Meyers hará de bueno, mientras que John Travolta hará de malo (después de ver Hairspray, se me hace difícil imaginarme esto). El guión fue escrito parcialmente por Luc Besson. Link.
Everybody’s fine: Robert De Niro hará de un viudo que luego de vivir un tiempo solo, decide visitar a cada uno de sus hijos para reconectarse con la vida, en esta comedia dramática en la que compartirá cartel con Drew Barrymore y Kate Beckinsale. Link.
Paranormal Activity: una de terror con un trailer que muestra mucha gente asustándose con la peli. Ojalá me asuste al menos la mitad que a las personas que aparecen ahí. Link.
Stone: un thriller carcelario, con staff de gran renombre. Dirige John Curran (The Painted Veil), y actuan Edward Norton (preso de turno), Robert De Niro (un oficial de libertad condicional) y Milla Jovovich (la esposa del personaje de Norton). Link.
Ciencia y tecnología
Entre las cosas más importantes de la semana, se encuentra la realización del TechCrunch50, que es una de las conferencias principales en lo que a emprendedores en Internet se refiere. Como en las ediciones anteriores, 50 start-ups presentaron sus proyectos e ideas y compitieron por un gran premio de US$50.000, que finalmente se llevó RedBeacon, cuya web permite contratar servicios locales a través de Internet (un pintor, un jardinero, o un plomero, por ejemplo). La conferencia fue un gran éxito, y como siempre, en TechCrunch hicieron una gran cobertura del evento. Lamentablemente, sobre el final del evento se corrió el rumor de que sus organizadores habían tenido una pelea, y que quizás este fuese el último TechCrunch50. Habrá que esperar y ver. Link y Link.
Otra de las noticias de la semana es que Facebook ha pasado los 300 millones de usuarios. En sólo 5 meses, la cantidad de usuarios del servicio pasó de 200 a 300 millones, acelerando así su ya increíble tasa de crecimiento (había tardado 8 meses en crecer de 100 a 200 millones de usuarios). Y lo que es más importante (para los ejecutivos de Feisbuc, al menos), es que finalmente el sitio es “cash flow positive”, es decir, que está generando ganancias. Puede parecer lo contrario, pero monetizar este tipo de servicios es complicado, ya que requieren una inversión y una infraestructura muy grande. Link.
Hermanos separados al nacer
HP presentó los primeros exponentes de la línea de notebooks “Envy”, que son un calco de las MacBook Pro Unibody (huelo a quilombo en un futuro cercano), con la salvedad de tener hardware bastante más potente (y Windows 7, of course). La versión de 15.6” contará con un procesador Core i7 de Intel, vídeo Radeon HD 4830 de 1gb y soportará hasta 16gb de RAM. Link.
Microsoft presentó el Zune HD, la nueva versión de su reproductor multimedia portátil, que compite directamente con el iPod Touch de Apple. Tiene una pantalla de 3.3” con tecnología OLED, y cuenta con el procesador Tegra APX 2600, que se enfoca en la reproducción de vídeo HD y gráficos complejos. En Engadget han hecho una revisión completa, que merece la pena leer si estamos pensando adquirir un reproductor de este tipo. Link.
Una más de Microsoft: Bing está ganando cuota de mercado en los Estados Unidos, habiendo tomado más del 10% al día de la fecha. Al parecer, la apuesta de la empresa de Redmond en el mercado dominado por Google está dando buenos resultados, y para demostrar que no se han dormido en los laureles, continúan agregando nuevas características al buscador. Durante el TechCrunch50 han presentado la búsqueda visual, que devuelve los resultados de las búsquedas en forma de galería interactiva de imágenes. Link.
También durante el TechCrunch50, Google lanzó su servicio FastFlip, que pretende ser algo así como un vistazo por los contenidos más populares de la actualidad. La idea es ir pasando (”flip”) por capturas completas de distintas páginas, ordenadas por popularidad, tópico, etc. Lo estuve probando, y me quedo con los RSS por costumbre, comodidad y elección. Sin embargo, puede ser una buena idea para pegar una ojeada rápida a la actualidad desde nuestros dispositivos móviles. Link.
LG se sube al tren de Android y presenta el GW620, su primer dispositivo que operará con el sistema operativo de Google, que de a poco está siendo adoptado por las grandes marcas. Bastante parecido en forma y funciones al Dext de Motorola, del cual les contaba algo en el resumen anterior. Parece esa será la tendencia en los próximos dispositivos. Link.
Lamborghini presentó el modelo 2010 del “Reventón”, auto que más allá de su desafortunado nombre (es el nombre de un toro español, pero supongo que no va a ser la primera cosa que se le venga a la mente a cada uno que escuche el nombre por primera vez), las menos de 20 unidades que se producirán contarán con un motor V12 de 641hp, que harán que el Reventón alcance los 100kmph en 3.4s. Sala por Sala
Una entrevista a uno de mis autores de comics argentinos preferido, Gustavo Sala, a quien tuve la posibilidad de conocer hace ya varios años en la primera edición de Necomicón. Sala es dueño de un humor irreverente como pocos, y lo demuestra en esta entrevista realizada por los responsables de Tierra Freak, con comentarios como que no puede creer que nadie publique los comics de Tom Hanks, quien de acuerdo a Gustavo dibuja y escribe unos comics increíbles, sobre toda la saga del “Capitán Cara de Felpudo de Bienvenida”. HTC ya ha presentado oficialmente en España HTC Tattoo, el “cuarto” terminal Android de HTC. Y ponemos lo de cuatro entre comillas porque precísamente ellos mismos divulgan que en los dos primeros lanzamientos (HTC Dream y HTC Magic, distribuidos por Movistar y Vodafone en exclusiva, respectivamente), ellos actuaban como meros acompañantes, aunque lógicamente sí desarrollaron el terminal. Fue con HTC Hero, terminal que lanzaron en exclusiva con Orange a principios de verano, cuando HTC comenzó realmente a manejar la situación.
Ahora, con el lanzamiento de HTC Tattoo, la compañía se afianza en primera línea, tanto en el desarrollo de productos Android (nadie tiene tanta experiencia acumulada en tan poco tiempo) como en el de interfaces (recordemos que HTC también fue el primero en desarrollar una interfaz específica para Android, HTC Sense).
Lógicamente, HTC Tattoo también incorpora toda esta experiencia, aunque en dósis más concentradas. No en vano es, como los propios portavoces de HTC lo han denominado durante la presentación, el benjamín de la familia.
Entre las curiosidades del producto a mí me ha llamado la atención, por un lado, la posibilidad de personalizar la carcasa con distintos diseños propuestos por HTC (o los tuyos propios, con un coste adicional), y por el otro el hecho de que contará (cuando esté disponible, claro está), con la nueva versión del sistema operativo de Google, Android 1.6, conocido en la escena como Donut.
De acuerdo con la información del fabricante, HTC Tattoo saldrá a un precio de 349 euros (libre), a falta de llegar a un acuerdo con uno o más operadores (ahora están en busca de la mejor opción).

Last Monday, Samsung Electronics has launched its Samsung Application Store.
Users of Samsung smartphones, such as the Samsung Omnia, in the UK, Italy and France have now access to mobile apps; 30 other countries will soon follow.
The Samsung Application Store joins a large range of other app stores, including Apple App Store, Blackberry’s App World, Nokia’s Ovi and Google’s Android Market.
It took me a little time to figure out how to do screenshots, but I wanted to share some of the new Android Market that comes with Donut. I loaded the new software to my phone thanks to Cyanongen’s new experimental mod. I don’t know if I would reccomend the mod just yet. I haven’t played around with it too much yet but it has crashed on me a couple of times, so for now I would stick with his stable mods if you’re doing that sort of thing.
The market is a much nicer improvement over the old one. It’s a lot easier on the eyes and from what I’ve seen so far, the annoying search bug seems to be fixed. Also, apps are separated by “Apps” or “Games” and once you are inside a category below that, you can filter by “Top paid”, “Top free”, and “Just in”. One other thing I like is that you can always go right back to the market home by touching the logo at the top left of the screen. Anyone out there getting the mod, hope you enjoy it.
Se había especulado que la nueva versión del sistema operativo Android (conocida como donut…uhmmm) estaría disponible en los nuevos terminales que se comercializaran el próximo mes, y parece ser que se va a cumplir con las expectativas creadas, con lo que podremos zamparnos alguno de los nuevos terminales el próximo mes de octubre. Destacar que introduce un gran número de nuevas características y tecnologías, con soporte para CDMA además de la conectividad GSM, y diferentes tamaños de pantalla, con lo que las nuevas aplicaciones pueden ser desarrolladas para diferentes redes móviles y dispositivos de diferente tamaño. Sin duda, esto abrirá las puertas a los smartbook o netbook que deseen implementarlo.
En lo que a tecnología se refiere, ahora se tiene acceso a soporte de nivel framework, para diferentes resoluciones de pantalla, ya sea QVGA o WVGA (hasta 850 x 480 puntos por pulgada), APIs de gestos, y una aplicación dedicada de conversión de texto a voz “text-to-speech“, la cual maneja diferentes idiomas.Recordemos que los actuales teléfonos con Android tienen su pantalla limitadaa la resulicón de 320 x 480 puntos por pulgada como máximo.
En el vídeo al que hacemos referencia más abajo, es posible observar la implementación de Quick Search Box, un buscador que permite localizar en nuestro dispositivo cualquier referencia a la palabra escrita, ya sea documento, contacto o similar. Sin duda, es un aspecto que venían demandando los usuarios, al igual que Apple la implementara en su versión iPhone OS 3.0 para facilitar las búsquedas tanto en el iPhone como en los iPod. Su diseño es muy similar a QuickSearch sobre webOS (Palm), permitiendo llevar a cabo las busquedas desde la pantalla principal del teléfono.
Android 1.6 SDK requiere de una nueva versión de Android Development Tools (ADT). El SDK también incluye un nuevo conjunto de herramientas que permiten descargar componentes adicionales. Finalmente, cabe destacar que en el pasado año se vendieron a nivel mundial cerca de 195.000 teléfonos con Android, mientras que en lo que llevamos de año la cifra asciende ya a 3,4 millones, según destaca la consultora Gartner.

After playing around with the liveandroid instance on my Virtualbox VM, it was time to try out installing some apps.
Few basic things first:
For switching to the console mode / terminal screen press : Alt-F1
For switching back to the GUI mode from console mode press : Alt-F7
I read about how to install apps here.
Android apps are files ending with .apk. And all that is needed to install the app is to copy the *.apk file to the /system/app folder. Image-1 shows how my /system/app folder looks like after I have installed a few apps.
So the only task remains is downloading the apps and copying them to the /system/app folder. For downloading apps try any of the following:
Download the AndAppStore Client – and use this client to browse and install apps. I find this as the best way.

Ensure that the SoftwareDirectory-1_3_0.apk is copied to the /system/app folder

The G1 does not connect to ad hoc networks through the wifi manager but we can hack it to allow scanning and connecting to ad hocs. I’ve been trying to figure this out for the longest time. Before you begin, you need to root your G1 and be comfortable using the command line. We will be editing tiwlan.ini and wpa_supplicant.conf. I will be showing you 2 ways to edit the files. Using vi and adb.
Settings
edit tiwlan.ini to read:

dot11DesiredSSID = HydtechAdhoc (or whatever name u want)

Download terminal from the market and type:
su (for superuser mode)
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system (mount partition as writable)
vi /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini (open tiwlan.ini in vi text editor)
now type A to enter editing mode, finish editing your file and hold trackball+1 to stop editing. To save and exit type :wq
vi /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf (open file for editing)
edit with the settings given above and exit and don’t forget to change the partition back to read only
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
reboot
How to edit files with adb on Ubuntu:
Connect your g1 to the computer using a usb cable and make sure USB debugging in enabled
Open up terminal and type
cd /home/hydtech/[android sdk folder]/tools (navigate to the directory which has you adb tool)
get the files from the device and place them in the root folder
sudo ./adb pull /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini /
sudo ./adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf /
edit and save the files with the settings provided above using gedit or kate or what have you
make the partition read writable
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
exit
place the files back onto the device
sudo ./adb push /tiwlan.ini /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
sudo ./adb push /wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
make partition read only again
adb shell
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
exit
reboot device.
Troubleshooting
shows connected but no internet
1. I was having a problem where the connection would keep disconnecting and when it would connect, it wouldn’t load pages. To fix this I had to disable my WEP key.
SSID not showing
2. If the SSID isn’t showing up in the list, make sure you have ap_scan=2 in your wpa_supplicant
Unsuccessful connection
3. Try enabling static IP if DHCP isn’t working for you. It’s under advanced menu.
Le succès de l’iPhone permettrait à Safari de régner en maître. Mais les chiffres des instituts d’études sont loin d’être homogènes.
Contrairement à l’Internet fixe, les études sur les navigateurs utilisés dans les téléphones mobiles étaient plutôt rares. Mais avec le succès des smartphones et notamment des iPhone, le surf sur Internet depuis un terminal sans-fil devient aujourd’hui une réalité de poids.
Il devient donc intéressant de se pencher sur les choix des mobinautes en matière de browser. Deux instituts d’études ont donc analysé la part de marché des navigateurs pour smartphones. Si les conclusions se rejoignent, les chiffres sont toutefois très différents.
Une constante donc : l’iPhone, et donc Safari, obtiendrait dans les deux cas la plus importante part de marché. Selon NetApplications, dont les chiffres datent de février dernier, le terminal à la pomme revendique une part de 66% mais elle n’est que de 36% pour StatCounter qui a étudié la période janvier à septembre.
Android bien placé
33% à 66% des accès Interne Mobile dans le monde se font donc à partir du terminal fruitier. Un tour de force puisque l’iPhone déteint encore une part de marché marginale face à Nokia et autres Samsung.
Derrière, on trouve les BlackBerry qui profitent d’un nombre de références important. Selon NetApplications, 9% des accès Internet mobile se font depuis les terminaux de RIM, le chiffre monte à 24% chez StatCounter.
Windows Mobile (Internet Explorer Mobile) prend la 3e place du podium avec une part de 7% à 18%.
Malgré des références encore peu nombreuses, Android accroche la 4e place avec 6% à 7% de parts de marché. Pour NetApplications, la plate-forme de Google talonne donc Microsoft dans le domaine de l’accès Web. Il est vrai qu’Internet Explorer est connu pour sa qualité moyenne depuis un mobile (la nouvelle version associée à Windows Mobile 6.5 pourrait changer la donne).
Surtout, Android se paye le luxe d’égaler Symbian qui pourtant est en théorie l’OS le plus utilisé pour les smartphones (selon le Gartner). Son utilisation pour se connecter au Web est faible : 6% pour NetApplications et 14% pour StatCounter.
Du côté de Palm, NetApplications estime que seulement 2% des accès Internet Mobile se font depuis ses terminaux. Pourtant, pour beaucoup d’observateurs WebOS a particulièrement été bien pensé pour se connecter à Internet…
